What is a Vasectomy?
A Vasectomy is surgical procedure performed on
the male vas deferens (tubes that transport sperm)
thereby disrupting and blocking flow. The purpose
of the operation is to render the male person
sterile.
What is Vasectomy Reversal?
A vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure
that restores the flow of sperm through the vas
deferens (the tubes connecting the testes to prostate
and the penis). At False Creek Surgical Centre
this procedure is performed only by board certified
Urologist specialists who have special training
in Microsurgical techniques. The sutures used
by these surgeons to rejoin the tubes are often
finer than a human hair.
There are 2 types of reversals:
- Vasovasostomy (most common type of reversal
with a high success rate)
- Vaoepididymostomy (less commonly performed)
The type of reversal you may require depends
largely on the clinical findings during surgery.
What are the success rates associated with
Vasectomy Reversal?
With Microsurgical techniques, vasectomy reversal
procedures result in sperm appearing in the semen
85 to 97 % of men. Approximately 50 % of couples
subsequently achieve a pregnancy.
What Complications can occur from the Surgery
itself?
Normal signs and symptoms after surgery include:
- slight swelling
- bruising or discoloration of the scrotal area
These generally do not require a doctor's attention.
A sore throat, headache, nausea, constipation
and general body aches due to the anaesthesia
and surgery may also be present. These symptoms
usually resolve within a few days.
Severe complications are rare such as wound infection
and hematoma and may require additional surgery
and or antibiotics.
